“The Vast Colure” is Massergy’s first album for Arecibo Records and Eric Jensen’s first official release to the public as an artist. It was performed, recorded and mixed outdoors in Austin, Texas during the winter and spring of 2012/2013. Entirely beat-less and minimally processed, the album’s eleven tracks use deep drones and swirling textures as a foundation to support additional layers of repetitive melodic phrasing and improvisation. The music has an ambiguous and hazy sound quality with moments of brightness and clarity shining through like stray beams of sunlight piercing a darkened cloud. Jensen performed each track on “The Vast Colure” by hand without the use of loops, sequencing or software with many of the sounds and melodies improvised in a single take. Harkening back to a simpler time in ambient music, “The Vast Colure” is a deeply personal, emotional and sublime listening experience.
A “Colure” is a meridian (or great circle) located within the celestial sphere that surrounds the earth. There are two significant colures that pass through the poles of earth; the equinoctial and solstitial. Twice a year when day and night are of equal length, the sun rests on the equinoctial colure. On the longest and shortest days of the year, the sun rests on the solstitial colure. Ancient civilizations understood the significance of the equinox and solstice. Modern cultures continue to recognize and celebrate these dates by performing rituals symbolic of fertility, birth, renewal, transformation and death. These themes are suggested and explored in “The Vast Colure”. The album’s title illustrates an inevitable path without end where birth and death are simply two opposite points of the same circle.
